In the days of sailing ships, cannons and gunpowder Holland was a great sailing nation. Trading the world’s finest spices and botanicals from all over the globe.
High quality gin was thought to be remedy to many things encountered by those sailing the high seas. To keep this precious spirits secure, it was often stored below deck next to the gunpowder. A gunpowder-proof spirit was needed! So a 57% alcohol by volume/ 100° proof gin was distilled, so the gunpowder would still explode in case of any leakage.
It became known as Navy Strength.
